Water filters: Why your tap water isn’t always safe and how a filter really makes the difference

Tap water in the Netherlands and Germany is known as “safe.” But safe doesn’t always mean healthy or optimal for your body. What’s actually coming out of your tap, and when is a water filter worth it?

What’s (invisibly) in tap water?

  • Chlorine (residues): Used to disinfect water, but dries out skin, hair and mucous membranes.

  • Lead & heavy metals: Especially in older houses (lead pipes) or during plumbing work.

  • Medicine residues & hormones: Not fully removed by most water treatment plants.

  • Pesticides & microplastics: More and more often found in drinking water due to agriculture and industry.

  • Limescale/hardness: Not directly dangerous, but can burden devices and your skin.

Many of these substances aren’t immediately dangerous, but build up over time. Especially for sensitive people, children, pregnant women, or if you drink a lot of water, this can become a problem.

Why use a water filter?

  1. Healthier base: Filters remove most chlorine, heavy metals, pesticides and microplastics. Your water tastes softer and is less burdensome for your body.

  2. Better for skin and hair: Especially for skin issues, dry hair, eczema or allergies, a filter (even for the shower!) can make a huge difference.

  3. Safety for the whole family: Children, the elderly and people with a weak immune system are more sensitive to contamination.

Which filters are there and what really works?

  • Jug filters (Brita, BWT, etc.): Easy, cheap, remove chlorine and some heavy metals. Downside: need frequent replacement, don’t filter everything.

  • Under sink systems (osmosis, activated carbon): More advanced, filter 99% of all impurities. An investment, but very pure results.

  • Shower filters: Specially for chlorine and heavy metals ideal for skin issues or if you have a baby/child.

  • Whole house filters: For those who want all tap water filtered. Largest investment, biggest impact.

My experience

Since I use tap and shower filters, my skin issues and irritated eyes are gone. Water tastes softer, tea and coffee are better, and I feel calmer after a shower.

Pay attention when choosing a filter:

  • Replace filters on time (otherwise, you still get bacteria build up)

  • Check filter type (activated carbon, ceramic, reverse osmosis)

  • Always check the specs: What does it filter and what not?
