Water Filters: Why Your Tap Water Isn't Always Safe and How a Filter Really Makes the Difference
Tap water in the Netherlands and Germany is known as "safe." But safe doesn't always mean healthy or optimal for your body. What actually comes out of your tap, and when is a water filter worth it?
What's (invisibly) in tap water?
- Chlorine (residues): Used to disinfect water, but dries out skin, hair, and mucous membranes.
- Lead & heavy metals: Especially in older homes (lead pipes) or during construction work.
- Medication residues & hormones: Not sufficiently filtered out in many water treatment plants.
- Pesticides & microplastics: Increasingly found in drinking water due to agriculture and industry.
- Lime/hardness: Not directly dangerous, but can burden appliances and your skin.
Many of these substances are not directly harmful in small quantities, but cumulative exposure over years can have an impact on your health.
Why use a water filter?
- Better taste: Without chlorine and lime, water tastes softer and fresher.
- Healthier skin & hair: Especially for people with eczema, allergies, or sensitive skin, a filter (including for shower water!) can make a big difference.
- Safety for the whole family: Children, elderly, and people with weak immunity are more sensitive to contamination.
What filters exist and what really works?
- Pitcher filters (Brita, BWT, etc.): Easy, affordable, removes chlorine and some heavy metals. Downside: frequent replacement needed, doesn't filter everything.
- Under-sink systems (Osmosis, activated carbon): More advanced, filters 99% of all contamination. Investment, but very pure results.
- Shower filters: Specially for chlorine and heavy metals ideal for skin issues or if you have a baby/child.
- Whole-house filters: For those who want all water from the pipe filtered. Biggest investment, most effect.
Things to consider when choosing a filter:
- Replace filters on time (otherwise you get a breeding ground for bacteria)
- Look at the filter type (activated carbon, ceramic, reverse osmosis)
- Always check the specifications: What does it filter and what doesn't it?
Short & sweet
Your water is just as important as what you eat. Good filtration is not a luxury it's a conscious choice for your health. NOT FOR TOMORROW because what you drink today determines how you feel tomorrow.
