Methylene blue was discovered in 1876 as a textile dye, but medical applications were soon discovered. The molecule can function as an alternative electron carrier in the mitochondrial electron transport chain.

What exactly is methylene blue?
Methylene blue (methylthioninium chloride) is one of the oldest synthetic compounds in medicine, discovered in 1876. It is on the WHO Essential Medicines List for treatment of methemoglobinemia. However, this product is not intended as a medicine or supplement.

Why does urine/stool turn blue-green?

Do not combine with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAO inhibitors or other serotonergic medication due to risk of serotonin syndrome. Also do not use with G6PD deficiency (favism). Always consult a doctor when taking medication.

Critical Drug Interactions
Serotonergic medications: Do NOT combine methylene blue with SSRIs (fluoxetine, sertraline, paroxetine, citalopram, escitalopram), SNRIs (venlafaxine, duloxetine), MAO inhibitors, triptans, or St. John's Wort. The combination may cause serotonin syndrome — a potentially life-threatening condition. Symptoms include: agitation, confusion, rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, dilated pupils, muscle rigidity, and hyperthermia. Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms occur.
G6PD Deficiency
Do NOT use if you have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. Methylene blue may cause haemolytic anaemia in individuals with this condition. If you are unsure about your G6PD status, consult your physician before use.
