%NRV is the percentage of the EU Nutrient Reference Value that one daily portion of a product delivers. The Nutrient Reference Value (NRV) is a single fixed figure for each vitamin and mineral, written into EU law in Annex XIII of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011. So when a zinc capsule says "300% NRV", it means the portion provides three times that legal reference figure of 10 mg. The number is a shared yardstick for comparison, not a personal target you must hit and not a safety limit. Understanding what it does and does not measure is the difference between reading a label and being sold one.
The short answer
Every vitamin and mineral that can legally be declared on a food or supplement in the EU has one official reference figure. Vitamin C is 80 mg, zinc is 10 mg, magnesium is 375 mg, vitamin D is 5 micrograms. The %NRV on a label is simply your portion divided by that figure, expressed as a percentage. It exists so that two products can be compared on the same scale, and so that shoppers across 27 countries and many languages read the same benchmark. It was never meant to describe what your body, specifically, needs today.

Where the NRV numbers actually come from
The values are set in law, not by the brand. Annex XIII, Part A of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 lists a Nutrient Reference Value for each of the 13 vitamins and 14 minerals that may be declared. A handful of those anchor points: vitamin A 800 micrograms, vitamin D 5 micrograms, vitamin C 80 mg, vitamin B6 1.4 mg, vitamin B12 2.5 micrograms, folic acid 200 micrograms, calcium 800 mg, magnesium 375 mg, iron 14 mg, zinc 10 mg, iodine 150 micrograms, selenium 55 micrograms.
Two things follow from this. First, the figure is identical on every label in the EU, so a "%NRV" from one brand is directly comparable to the next. Second, it is a single adult reference. It does not flex for age, sex, body size, pregnancy, or activity. That simplicity is exactly what makes it useful for a label and useless as a personal prescription.
NRV is not the same as your personal requirement
This is the most important distinction, and the one labels never explain. The NRV is a labelling convenience. Your actual physiological need is described by a different, more careful set of figures called Dietary Reference Values (DRVs), which the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) derives from the evidence and publishes per age group and per sex.
Take magnesium. The label NRV is one number, 375 mg. But EFSA's science based adequate intake is 350 mg per day for men and 300 mg per day for women, with separate values for children. So the single 375 mg on your label already averages over people whose real reference differs by 50 mg or more.
Vitamin D shows the gap even more starkly. The labelling NRV is still 5 micrograms, a figure that dates back decades. EFSA's current dietary reference value, set after a full review of the evidence, is an adequate intake of 15 micrograms per day for healthy adults. The label yardstick and the best current science are a factor of three apart. That is not a scandal, it is how the system works: the legal labelling figure changes slowly through regulation, while scientific reference values are updated on their own timeline. Knowing this stops you from treating "100% NRV" as a gold standard. Sometimes it undershoots what the current evidence suggests.

Why 100% is a reference, not a goal
Because the NRV is one fixed figure, hitting exactly 100% has no special meaning for you personally. A product can deliver 40% of the magnesium NRV and be exactly right for someone who eats a mineral rich diet and just wants a top up. Another product can deliver 300% of the zinc NRV and be appropriate for a short, targeted course. The percentage tells you the dose relative to a benchmark. Whether that dose suits you depends on your diet, your intake from other foods and supplements, and, for some nutrients, safe upper limits.
Our own magnesium is a good worked example. A serving provides 251 mg of elemental magnesium, which is roughly 67% of the 375 mg NRV. Below 100%, and deliberately so: it is designed to close a typical dietary gap alongside food, not to deliver your entire day's magnesium in one capsule. A bigger number would not automatically be better.
Why some ingredients show no %NRV at all
Look at a creatine tub or a shilajit jar and you will find grams and milligrams, but no percentage. That is not an omission or a red flag. The %NRV can only be shown for the specific vitamins and minerals that appear in Annex XIII. Anything outside that list has no legal reference value, so there is nothing to take a percentage of.
Creatine, choline, inositol, amino acids, fibres and botanical extracts such as shilajit or fulvic acid are simply not in the vitamin and mineral table. Our creatine label therefore states 5 g per serving and stops there, because a percentage would be legally meaningless. When you see an ingredient quoted only in grams or milligrams, read the absolute amount and any authorised claim, and ignore the absence of a percentage entirely.
When a high percentage is fine, and when it deserves a second look
A number far above 100% is not automatically alarming. Context decides. Water soluble nutrients such as vitamin C and most B vitamins are not stored to any large extent, and routine excess is largely excreted, which is why B complex products often show several hundred percent without concern. Fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and some minerals behave differently: they can accumulate, and they carry safe upper intake levels, so a very high percentage is worth understanding rather than assuming.
Our vitamin D3 and K2 drops illustrate this. At 5000 IU, the vitamin D content is 125 micrograms, which is 2500% of the 5 micrograms label NRV. That looks dramatic, but remember the NRV itself is the old, low figure; measured against EFSA's 15 microgram reference the same dose is far less extreme, and high strength vitamin D drops are common precisely because the labelling reference lags the science. The lesson is not "high percentage bad". It is: for fat soluble nutrients, read the actual microgram or milligram amount, know the nutrient's upper limit, and judge the dose on its merits rather than on the percentage alone.
The 15% rule: how a nutrient even earns a place on the label
There is a floor as well as a reference. Under the same Annex XIII, a vitamin or mineral generally has to be present at a "significant amount", at least 15% of its NRV, before it can be declared and its %NRV shown. For food supplements the significant amount is judged per daily portion rather than per 100 g. This is why a formula will not list a mineral present only in trace, dusting quantities: below the 15% threshold it cannot legally claim it. When you compare two labels, this rule is quietly working in your favour, because a declared nutrient is present in at least a meaningful amount.

How to compare two labels honestly
Once you know what %NRV is, a few habits let you compare products fairly instead of being swayed by the biggest number.
Check the reference basis. For supplements the %NRV is per daily portion. Confirm what that portion is: one capsule, two capsules, a scoop, a set number of drops. A "200% NRV" spread across four capsules a day is a different commitment from the same figure in one.
Count the servings, not just the price. A cheaper tub with 30 servings can cost more per day than a pricier one with 120. The %NRV is per serving, so the honest comparison is cost and dose per day.
Read elemental versus compound weight. Minerals are delivered as compounds (zinc picolinate, magnesium bisglycinate), and what matters is the elemental amount. A good label states the elemental figure, which is what the %NRV should be based on. If a label quotes a large compound weight but a small elemental amount, the compound number is not the one to compare.
Look past the percentage to the form. Two products can both show, say, 100% of the vitamin B12 NRV while using different forms (methylcobalamin versus cyanocobalamin) or different mineral salts. The percentage is identical; the form is not. Use the %NRV to check the dose, then read the ingredient itself for the quality decision.
Do not chase 100%. Decide, ideally with your own diet and where relevant a blood result in mind, how much you actually want from a supplement, then find the product whose real amount matches. The percentage is a map, not the destination.
Frequently asked questions
Does 100% NRV mean I have covered my daily need?
Not necessarily. The NRV is one fixed adult reference, not your personal requirement. Your evidence based need can be higher or lower depending on age, sex, and other factors, and for some nutrients the current EFSA reference intake differs from the older labelling NRV. 100% means you have met the label benchmark, nothing more.
Is a supplement with a very high %NRV dangerous?
Not by itself. For water soluble vitamins routine excess is largely excreted. For fat soluble vitamins and some minerals there are safe upper intake levels, so a high percentage is a prompt to read the actual amount and consider your total intake from all sources, not an automatic warning.
Why do creatine, shilajit or choline show no %NRV?

It is not your personal requirement, not a maximum, and not a quality mark. The best current science, in EFSA's Dietary Reference Values, often sits at a different number, sometimes higher (vitamin D), sometimes split by sex (magnesium). So read the percentage, then look straight past it to the three things that actually matter: the real amount in milligrams or micrograms, the form of the nutrient, and how it fits the rest of your day. A label read this way stops being marketing and starts being information.
