Plasma magnesium rose significantly only at 1 hour after magnesium oxide, and only at 4 hours after magnesium citrate. It did not rise significantly after magnesium bisglycinate, a form often marketed as premium.

This study was run and funded by the maker of a competing microencapsulated magnesium ingredient. Readers should weigh the result with that conflict of interest in mind. The data show that a standard, lower-cost form can outperform a more expensive one in acute absorption, at least under these specific conditions.

What does third-party testing actually buy you?

Ambrosio (2020) found that 12 supplements labelled to contain ecdysterone had an actual content generally much lower than the labelled content. Gardener (2025) tested 156 commercial prenatal vitamins: lead was above the limit of quantification in 83 percent, with 15 percent above 0.5 microgram per serving (the California Proposition 65 daily threshold). Cadmium appeared in 73 percent, DEHP in 25 percent, and DBP in 13 percent.

Contaminants are another concern. Jasinska-Balwierz (2025) examined 11 adaptogenic supplements on the Polish market. In processed forms, lead exceeded permissible limits by up to 235 percent and nickel by up to 321 percent. The study also noted that Indian raw material contained significantly more nickel than Chinese raw material (p < 0.01).

These numbers illustrate that without third-party testing, a supplement’s label is often an unreliable guide. Testing adds a real cost to the product, but it is the only way to verify what is inside the bottle. In a 2025 study of 156 commercial prenatal vitamins, lead was above the limit of quantification in 83 percent of samples, and caplet, capsule and tablet forms were associated with more lead and cadmium.
